Abstract
1471022 Venting/delivery device HAEMONETICS CORP 30 April 1974 [11 May 1973] 18926/74 Heading B8V A sealed container of liquid, e.g. saline solution is emptied using a moulded plastics by-pass spike 20, 21 or 22, that has a tip 35 for penetrating the seal 14 of the container, a passageway for liquid flow and a gas vent which comprises a central thin-walled rigid metal tube 30, preferably of stainless steel and of small diameter, said tube extending beyond the tip to prevent the vent gas being drawn out with the liquid. The by-pass spike is formed as three separate mouldings, i.e. tip member 31, central member 32, and body 33; these are preferably of synthetic resin such as polystyrene or polycarbonate and are either welded or bonded together. The tip 35 has parts 36 that preferably have smooth contours to avoid damage to the seal and which open into a flow passage 52. This in turn is connected to the space 93 by passageways 91 and 92, Fig. 9, on either side of a rectangular part 82 at the top of the central member 32. From 93 the liquid leaves via opening 90. A ring 42 formed at the end of the tip and an insert in the rectangular part 82 secure the vent tube 30, passages 80 and 84 in the part 82 connecting its interior to the space 81 and hence to the sidearm 85, which is normally connected to a source of sterile air to prevent contamination. The distance from parts 36 to the bottom of the outlet 76 and the diameter of the space 93 are chosen to maximize the flow rate subject to moulding restraints and to ensure no vent air is withdrawn with the liquid. A series of containers 10, 11 and 12 may be consecutively emptied through a single outlet 13, Fig. 1.
