Abstract

1470883 Data transmission; error correction TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 22 March 1974 [2 April 1973] 12864/74 Heading H4P In a communication system a transmitting station 10 or 11, Figs. 1 and 2, transmits blocks of data including an identification code for each block of data to a receiving station 11 or 10 without waiting for acknowledgements of preceding blocks from the receiving station, and the receiving station stores the identification codes of those blocks of received data which contain an error and transmits to the transmitting station a message including the identification code of each block of received data and a response portion to indicate whether the block was received correctly or contained an error. The transmitting station is then responsive to the identification codes received from the receiving station to retransmit to the receiving station only those blocks of data which contained errors. Each station 10 or 11 includes both a transmitter and a receiver unit 15 to provide duplex operation over lines 22. The transmit-receive unit 15 includes a data concentrator and computer interface unit (20, Fig. 4, not shown) which is disclosed in detail (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and includes a parity check function (51) and a transmitter receiver (21) which is also disclosed in detail (Figs. 7 and 8A, 8B, not shown). Each station 10, 11 has a computer 12 which includes a central processor 17, a memory unit 18 and a direct memory access 19. The received blocks of data at the receiving station are checked to determine blocks containing errors. This checking is performed by a cyclic redundancy comparison of the data with a cyclic redundancy code transmitted by the transmitting station. Logic circuits including shift registers (101 Figs. 9A and 9B, not shown) are used in the transmitter and receiver respectively to perform the cyclic redundancy check. In checking the received data the numeric binary value of the data block is divided by a constant and the remainder of the division is compared with a remainder provided by the transmitting station for the same block of data. At the transmitting station the numeric binary value of each data block is divided by a constant and a code representative of the remainder of such a division is transmitted to the receiving station. If the number of retransmissions of the incorrectly received block exceeds a preset value such as three an equipment failure is indicated.
