Abstract
1470578 Adjustable seat backs DAIMLERBENZ AG 12 July 1974 [21 July 1973] 31005/74 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] In a vehicle seat the backrest is pivoted to the seat frame and is adjusted for angle by varying the length of stays at each side, each stay being pivoted at one end to the seat frame and at the other end to the backrest, the arrangement being such that the triangle formed from the backrest/seat pivot and the two stay pivots is always within the contour of the backrest, and the adjustment mechanisms of the stays being connected by a transmission tranverse to the seat. In one embodiment Fig. 3 the backrest 3 is pivoted at 5 to a seat frame bracket 6. Each stay 17 is of L-shaped form and is also pivoted, at 7, to the bracket 6. A rack 16 on the stay meshes with wheel 13 supported by the backrest, the stay being constrained to stay in mesh with the wheel by sliding in a saddle 18 pivotally secured to the backrest. Wheel 13 is driven by a hand wheel 10 via gearing 11, 12, the hand wheel shaft 10a being used to inter-connect the identical systems on each side of the seat. Due to the gear ratio the adjuster is self locking, but a friction pad 19 on the wheel 11 may engage the backrest. A spring may be used to bias the friction pad, which spring-bias may be removed by an axial movement of the hand wheel or a plunger. In an accident sudden tension on the stay 17 will cause straightening of weakened portion 22 resulting in engagement of the rack with abutment 23 to provide a positive lock. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, each stay comprises a pair of side plates 27 pivoted at 7 to bracket 6, the plates 27 supporting an internally threaded worm-wheel 30 which engages the threaded rail 26. An eye on the rod is pivoted to bracket 25. The worm-wheel is driven by a worm 31 supported by ears 32 of plates 27, and the hand wheel shaft 10a once again inter-connects the identical devices on both sides of the seat. In this embodiment the gear ratio between worm and wheel, and wheel and rod are both self locking and no further emergency locking is necessary.
