Abstract

1470404 Welding by fusion UNION CARBIDE CORP 16 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 31382/74 Heading B3R [Also in Division B2] Flux coated welding electrodes are rendered moisture resistant by treating them with a solution or dispersion prepared by dispersing at least one of colloidal amorphous silica, quaternary ammonium colloidal silica solutions or soluble lithium and potassium silicates until the silica concentration is 1-20%, e.g. by brushing, coating or spraying, at a temperature of 5- 95‹ C. followed by drying. Electrodes of the low hydrogen and non-low hydrogen type may be treated, e.g. cellulosic and stainless steel electrodes. A treated electrode and an untreated electrode were used in a constrained fillet test under identical conditions. The treated electrode produced a sound weld while the untreated electrode produced a weld with underbead cracking. Electrodes including cellulose, titania and iron-oxide and stainless steel electrodes are referred to.
