Abstract

1469294 Colour-anodizing aluminium RIKEN LIGHT METAL INDUSTRIES CO Ltd 29 March 1974 [3 April 1973 (2) 17 May 1973] 14051/74 Heading C7B An integrally coloured film is produced on Al or its alloys by electrolysis in aqueous H 2 SO 4 substantially free of other electrolytes using a pulsed voltage as shown in Fig. 1 wherein E 1 is positive (e.g. up to 40V), E 2 is 5-120V, T is 0À2 to 120 sec, # = 0À1-60 sec and the mean current density is 0À5-20A/dm<SP>2</SP>. A negative base voltage with negative pulses may in addition be applied for part of the electrolysis, with numerical values as specified above. The Al may contain e.g. Fe or Si, which dissolve in the H 2 SO 4 and subsequently enter lattice defects in the coating to cause colouration, which is also stated to be due to reduction of SO 4 in lattice defects to sulphur and/or sulphide. Treatment for 30-60 min at 0-30‹C is specified.
