Abstract

1469107 Decorticating cashew nuts NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 3 April 1974 [4 April 1973] 16149/73 Heading A2Q Testae are removed from shelled cashew nut kernels by (a) subjecting the kernels to an air temperature between -1‹C and -8‹C for 15 to 25 minutes to loosen the testae and (b) detaching the loosened testae by abrasion. Prior to cooling step (a) the shelled kernels may be treated to remove any shell fragments and then dried to a water-content of about 4%. After detachment of the testae the kernels and testae may be separated by screening or air elutriation. A suitable apparatus comprises drier 10, cooler 12, rotary drum abrader 16 and manual sorting station 26. Drier 10 (Figs. 2 and 3-not shown) comprises a wire mesh conveyor passing through a chamber heated via a heat-exchanger by exhaust gases from a furnace. The furnace is fuelled with cashew nut shells. At the sorting station conveyor 26 feeds the treated kernels into channels 32 and 36. Successfully treated nuts are transferred by hand to channels 33 and 35. Damaged nuts are transferred by hand to channel 34. Nuts requiring manual peeling remain in channels 32 and 36.
