Abstract
911,907. Peanut hulling. HIND, H. M. May 8, 1961, No. 16735/61. Class 58. Apparatus for removing seed coats and dirt from shelled nuts (peanuts) comprises means conveying the nuts through an abrading zone and a spraying zone for fluid hot enough to soften the plant wax but insufficient to denature the protein surface. The nuts are fed from a hopper 32 to the valley between a spiral screw nut transporter roller 24 and a parallel roller, part of which is coarsely abrasive and part less abrasive. Under the mild abrasion 80, the nuts are sprayed with hot air, water or both at a temperature in range 140-175‹F and pressure 40-80 psi. The nuts are then passed to a conventional dielectric vacuum pressure oven operating at 40 mm and 175‹F produced by 25 mc/s at 75 kv. applied to electrodes 60 and 69; the tray 60 may be agitated. The resulting moisture content is 4-5%. Different rollers with varying abrasive surfaces may be employed.
