Abstract

1469011 Solvent extraction of Ni, Co, Zn or Cu INCO Ltd 4 Sept 1974 [17 Sept 1973] 38619/74 Heading C1A Nickel, cobalt, zinc or copper is extracted from an acidic aqueous solution containing one or more of these metals and also silica together with iron or aluminium, or both, by means of a liquid ion-exchange reagent carried in an organic, water-immiscible solvent, characterized by the feature that, before the aqueous solution is brought into contact with the ion-exchange reagent, it is oxidized and hydrolysed at a pH of at least 3À0 to form first a precipitate containing iron or aluminium or both, which is removed, and then the pH of the aqueous solution is adjusted to be within the range of from 4 to 6 and any silica-containing precipitate formed is removed. Suitable liquid ion-exchange reagents (including amines, quaternary ammonium compounds, organic phosphates) and water-immiscible solvents (including kerosene, naphtha, mineral spirits) are listed.
