146,816. Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Co., (Assignees of Stecker, A. J.). Aug. 26, 1916, [Convention date]. Pivoted handles.- The pivoted handle of a vacuum cleaner or like portable appliance is provided with a channelled guide with which one end of a link pivoted to the casing has sliding engagement, for yieldingly retaining the handle in different positions. As shown, the handle 4 is attached to the usual bail 5 pivoted on the casing 1 of the cleaner. A link 16 pivoted at 18 to the casing has a pin 15 with projecting ends slidably engaging side grooves 9 in a channelled guide 14 fixed to the part 6 of the handle 4. A spring 11 projects at 12 through an opening in the back of the guide 14 and serves yieldingly to retain the end of the link 16 at the end 17 of the guide when the handle is in horizontal position, as shown, or when it is in the other extreme or upright position. When the handle is intermediate of these positions the end of the link rides in the guide 14. The link 16 is curved to clear the casing 1 as shown.
