Abstract
1468022 Locating faults in cables BICC Ltd 25 July 1974 [25 July 1973] 35446/73 Heading G1U Having established that a conductor 4, 5, Fig. 1 in a multi-core cable is broken, the location of the break is found by connecting one part 5 of the broken conductor to the other conductors and to earth as shown, by causing small localized flexing of the cable, for example by striking it with a tube 7, and by simultaneously detecting any resultant change in potential of the isolated part 4 of the broken cables. According to the Specification each blow by tube 7 causes a momentary change in the potential of the isolated part 4 of the conductor, the magnitude of the change when the blows are just before the break on part 4 being substantially larger than when the blows are just past the break on the earthed part 5. Thus, by applying a succession of blows along the faulty conductor the location of the break can be determined by noting the position at which the resulting potentials on the isolated part 4 change abruptly in magnitude.
