Abstract
1467974 Touch or proximity switching systems TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Ltd 5 March 1975 [21 March 1974] 12670/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division H2] In a supply distribution and control system in which a semi-conductor switching device 6 is connected to control the supply of power to a load 4 such as a lamp, heater or cooker, the switching device 6 is rendered conductive or non-conductive in response to a low voltage signal isolated from the supply by a proximity or touch responsive switch. When conductive pad 29 is touched or approached by an operator's finger the body capacitance effectively connected across the gate of FET 24 causes the latter to become non-conductive and SCR 17 to be triggered so that current flows through relay winding RLA to close contacts RLA-1. Triac 6 is thus rendered conductive and the positive and negative half cycles of the supply across terminals 1-2 are applied to load 4. As a result of the conduction of thyristor 17 a negative pulse is applied via capacitors 20, 21 to thyristors 15, 16 to turn them off if they are conducting. If DIM pad 27 is touched thyristor 16 is rendered conducting and relay RLB energized so that contacts RLB1 are closed, the triac 6 only conducting during negative half cycles of the supply. When OFF pad 25 is touched thyristor 15 conducts but not thyristors 16, 17 so that triac 6 is not gated on, and the load remains unenergized. An LED 31 is also energized to enable the pads to be located. In addition to the switches 14 a two state switch 33 may be connected in the circuit in parallel with the switches 14. The pads 25, 27, 29 may be covered with a thin insulating layer or include a conductive ring surrounding the pad to provide a resistive operation. A single FET may be provided and its connection to the two state trigger circuit such that successive resistive or capacitive charges at a single conductive pad connected to the FET gate cause the supply to be switched on and off successively. Details of a supply system in a house are schematically described, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown).
