Abstract

1467262 Ignition systems LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 12 Aug 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 50567/73 Heading F1B A spark ignition system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine includes a plurality of independently operating spark producing networks, one for each cylinder of the engine, each network incorporating an ignition transformer 13 and an engine operated switching device 16 in series with the primary winding 14 of the ignition transformer and current is stored in the primary winding when the device, is closed and a spark is produced when the device opens. The secondary winding 15 is connected to the appropriate spark-plug 21 without the inter-position of a distributer and the circuit from the secondary winding to the plug includes uni-directional current conducting means 19 preventing production of a spark when the switching device closes. Each switching device 16 is shown for convenience as an interrupter but may in fact be a transistor and the rate at which the transistor is turned on may be controlled gaps 22 are not needed if four-layer diodes are closed. A saturable reactor (not shown) may be employed between the positive terminal of the battery and the line 120.
