Abstract
1466660 Cellulosic colloids used in emulsion polymerization JAMES FERGUSON & SONS Ltd 6 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 41983/76 Divided out of 1466064 Heading C3P An emulsion polymer is prepared by emulsion polymerizing an olefinically unsaturated monomer or a mixture of monomers comprising at least 80 wt. per cent of acrylic monomer(s) and/or styrene in the presence of a chain transfer agent and a cellulosic material having a viscosity of more than 50 c.p.s. (as measured on a 5% aqueous solution) and up to 10,000 c.p.s. (as measured on a 1% aqueous solution), said measurements being taken using an Epprecht viscometer (Cup A Speed III). In the examples, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, acrylamide and methacrylic acid are copolymerized using n-dodecyl mercaptan as the chain transfer agent and a hydroxyethyl cellulose as the colloid. A dispersing agent and an initiator are also present.
