Abstract

1,230,332. Alumina. NALCO CHEMICAL CO. 9 April, 1969, No. 18291/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C3] Alumina is prepared by digesting bauxite in an aqueous solution at an elevated temperature with a strong base to solubilize the alumina and separating the alumina from the water-insoluble impurities by adding at least 0À1% by weight, based on the weight of the imuprities, of a novel composition comprising starch and a polyacrylic polymer, the weight ratio of said starch to said polymer being from 10 : 1 to 200 : 1, said polymer having a molecular weight of at least 50,000 and wherein at least 80% by weight of the polymer structure is made up of acrylic acid or acrylic acid salt groups. Suitable specified polymers include homopolymers comprising polyacrylie acid or salts thereof, and water soluble copolymers derived from copolymerizing 80-99% by weight of an alkali metal acrylate and 1-20% by weight of a monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compound containing a hydrophilic group in a side chain attached to the unsaturated hydrocarbon structure.
