Abstract
1,204,775. Alumina. NALCO CHEMICAL CO. 29 April, 1968, No. 20310/68. Heading C1A. Alumina is produced from bauxite by digesting the bauxite in aqueous solution at an elevated temperature with a strong base to dissolve the alumina, and separating the aluminate solution from water-insoluble impurities (red mud) by adding to the digested bauxite between 0.001 and 10 pounds per U.S. ton of wet red mud of an active ingredient which consists of a polymer having a molecular weight of at least 50,000 and containing at least 80% recurring units selected from acrylic acid and its salts, and precipitating alumina from the aluminate solution. The polymer may be a copolymer or interpolymer with, e.g., a monomer comprising an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compound containing a hydrophilic group, of which a number is listed.
