Abstract
1466312 Drawing GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 6 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 10101/74 Heading B3P [Also in Division C7] A wire drawing die comprises an inner member 11 consisting mainly of diamond and/or cubic boron nitride directly bonded to a supporting member 13 consisting mainly of tungsten carbide, titanium carbide and/or tantalum carbide bonded by cobalt, nickel and/or iron, the maximum distance between the peaks and valleys of the interface between the two members 11, 13 being 1-100 micrometres. The supporting member 13 which may contain 75-94% carbide and 6-25% metal bonding agent is bonded in a high temperature, high pressure apparatus (Fig. 3, not shown) to an inner member 11 comprising a single crystal or polycrystalline diamond, at least 70% diamond mixed with carbide or metal, or cubic boron nitride or a mixture of cubic boron nitride and diamond bonded by aluminium and nickel, cobalt, manganese, iron, vanadium or chromium. The composite die is mounted (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) in one or more support rings to apply a compressive stress of at least 10,000 p.s.i. to the die.
