1466248 Door retaining means; pneumatic sucker fasteners M V WILSON and N H PEARCE 4 Nov 1974 [6 Sept 1973] 42078/73 Headings E2A and E2X Means for retaining a door 15, or similar closure member, in an open position in which position the door lies in a face-to-face relationship with a surface such as a wall 16 comprises at least one suction pad 1 adapted for engagement to either the door or said surface or, in the case of more than one suction pad, to both the door and the said surface, whereby, when the door is opened the, or each, suction pad retains it in an open position, the at least one suction pad incorporating positive means to break the suction between the said one suction pad and the wall or other surface with which it cooperates a predetermined time after the formation of the said suction. As shown, the suction pad 1, made e.g. of flexible plastics such as P.V.C. and having a suction surface 3 recessed at 2 to receive a sponge rubber block 5, has a boss 4 with two holes 7, 8 which extend from the surface 3 into a groove 6 which extends across the rear surface of the boss 4 and which each accommodate a bored, air restrictor plug 9, 10, made e.g. of brass. The pad is fastened to a door 15, Fig. 2, e.g. by means of adhesive, or by screws, not shown, which pass through bores 11, 12 in the boss 4, the door 15 being spring-urged into its closed position and the pad being pressed against the wall surface 16 when the door is fully open. The block of sponge rubber 5 may be moulded, or bonded, into the recess 2 or, may be replaced by a coil spring, or similar, arrangement. Alternatively, the spring may be omitted. The plugs 9, 10 may be replaced by plugs made of porous material. The pad can be either mounted upon the door 15 or the wall 16; alternatively a pad may be mounted on the door and cooperate with a pad affixed to the wall 16.
