Abstract

1465354 Reciprocating conveyers MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 10 April 1974 [10 April 1973] 15837/74 Heading B8A Apparatus for positioning longitudinal members 44 on jigs 43 preparatory to welding the members 44 to cross-members (not shown) in the construction of a ships hull comprises two rows of wheeled carriers 18 guided on a pair of supports 1 vertically movable by hydraulic cylinders 8. The carriers 18 are connected by chains 25 (not shown) and are movable along the supports 1 by winch-actuated ropes. A pair of crane-supported pallets 38 are used to load the carriers 18. The supports 1 having been raised and the carriers 18 being in close proximity as shown in Fig. 5, the carriers are loaded and then moved to the right to the position shown in Fig. 7 in which they are more widely spaced. Leftward movement of the carriers to a desired final position may be effected by levers 45. The jigs 43 are then raised and the members 44 now clear of the carriers 18 are welded to the crossmembers (not shown). The supports 1 together with the carriers 18, after lowering, are returned to their left-hand positions after which they are raised for the next cycle. The carriers 18, pallets 38, and jigs 43 all have plate-like members 23, 42 for locating the members 44. In transferring the members to the jigs 43 it is only necessary that either the supports 1 or the jigs should be lowered or raised.
