Abstract

1464658 Pedestrian controlled vehicles POST OFFICE 6 March 1975 [12 March 1974] 11051/74 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A pedestrian controlled vehicle includes a variable ratio hydraulic transmission which is controlled in response to the effect applied by the operator to a control handle of a control means, the control means having a null state in which the transmission is hydraulically locked. The vehicle is powered by an I.C. engine 16 which drives a variable displacement hydraulic pump 18 connected in parallel to two wheel mounted motors 32. The control handle includes an operator's handle 26 telescopically mounted in a member 56 which is mounted by lug 58 on a vertically pivoted wheel thus permitting steering of the wheel by the handle. The operator's handle carries a block 64 slidable in a slot 66 of member 56 and centred by springs 78, 80, the block being connected by the core of a Bowden cable to a variable displacement control 86 on the pump. Pump displacement is normally set to zero so that motors 32 are not operated until handle 26 is pushed or pulled whereupon the displacement control 86 is varied depending on the effort applied. The vehicle is driven in a direction to re-centre the block 64 so that motion stops soon after the effort ceases. The hydrostatic transmission circuit includes a makeup pump 38 and a pump by-pass valve 48 which may be associated through a switch 54 with wheel brakes so that when the brake is operated fluid supply to the motors is cut-off. The parallel arrangement of wheel motors 32 allows for differential action of the wheels.
