Abstract
1464460 Detection of thick mercury in Hg cathode cells IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 45446/74 Heading C7B Build-up of thick Hg in an Hg-cathode cell is detected by moving a proximity sensor, e.g. of the RF type, towards the cathode and detecting when the sensor is a predetermined distance therefrom. This distance may be selected to give maximum sensitivity for the sensor e.g. up to 5mm. An electric linear actuator may automatically periodically move the sensor (e.g. every 30 secs) and the sensor output is connected both to a servo-relay, which reverses the actuator on reaching the predetermined distance, and to a potentiometer and bridge circuit for recording the position of reversal. A sheath of e.g. PTFE, PVC or polyethylene may protect the sensor. The Hg surface position rises as Hg-butter accumulates on the cell base.
