Abstract

A nickel catalyst particularly for use in the hydrogenation of fats and fatty acids is prepared by superficial reduction in the dry way and at a low temperature of precipitated nickel carbonate or hydroxide, while leaving the interior of the particles unreduced. It is essential that the carbonate or hydroxide should be in the form of fine non-coherent particles, and this condition is determined by the manner in which the precipitation is carried out; for example in the case of the carbonate it is preferred to precipitate by a bicarbonate in the cold, and in the case of the hydroxide by ammonia. In an example, to a solution of nickel sulphate is added at room temperature a solution of sodium bicarbonate, and the precipitate obtained is washed, dried, and reduced with hydrogen at 220 DEG C. for 2 hours.ALSO:Nickel carbonate in the form of fine non-coherent particles is prepared by precipitating a nickel salt solution with a solution of a bicarbonate in the cold.
