Abstract

In a process for the manufacture of mono-and polyhydric alcohols by the catalytic hydrogenation of mono- and poly-carboxylic acids and their esters there is used a catalyst obtained from aqueous solutions of a copper salt and a metal salt or salts of Group 2b, 6a and 7a of the Periodic Table by precipitation with aqueous alkalis at temperatures above 60 DEG C. such that the copper is precipitated partly or entirely as black CuO. Specified metal combinations are Cu and Zn; Cu and Cr; Cu and Mn; Cu, Zn and Cr; Cu, Mn and Cr, Cu and Cd; Cu, Cd and Cr; Cu, Cd and Mn. Preferably fatty acids having C7-20 are hydrogenated to the corresponding alcohols, both saturated and unsaturated. Specifically hydrogenation of cholesterins to cholestanols, esters of adipic, glutamic, pimelic or sebacic acids to the corresponding diols, o -oxy-undecane acid esters to undecane diol and g -keto pimelic acid to heptantriol is described. Example 2 describes the hydrogenation of spermacetic oil and other examples the hydrogenation of wool fats. German Specification 1,070,633 is referred to.
