Abstract
533,648. Propionic and adipic acids. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Aug. 17, 1939, No. 23775. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] Organic acids, principally propionic, but containing adipic and other non-volatile acids, are made by the hydrogenation of propiolic acid and its salts in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst such as nickel or cobalt. The temperature may be 50‹-80‹C. and the pressure 60-1,500 lbs. per square inch. In an example, an aqueous solution of sodium propiolate is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst prepared as follows :-sodium is added to a suspension of nickel chloride in a solution of naphthalene in glycol dimethyl ether, the precipitated pyrophoric nickel being washed with glycol dimethyl ether, dried, washed with water to remove sodium chloride, and partially oxidized by allowing air to come into contact with it slowly while the temperature is not allowed to rise above 25‹C. The yield of byeproducts can be increased by pretreating with a stream of oxygen a suspension of nickel in a solution of sodium propiolate at 20‹-60‹C. On subsequent hydrogenation the yield of non- volatile acids is 40-50 per cent.
