Abstract

1462787 Stiffened textiles COURTAULDS Ltd 7 June 1974 [8 June 1973] 27374/73 Headings D1L and D1P Textile fabric is treated preferably after stentering, to reduce fray and/or curl by coating the fabric with a molten stiffening agent in discrete areas and then allowing or causing the agent to cool or set. The stiffening agent may be a hot-melt adhesive e.g. polyester, polyamide or polyolefin, a natural or a synthetic wax preferably containing an epoxy resin. The agent in reservoir 12 may be applied to the margins of or as longitudinal strips on web 15 by means of transfer roller 14, the lower edge 13 of the reservoir acting as a doctor blade. The molten agent is supplied to the reservoir 12 from heated container 1 by tube 11 which has a screw 6 driven by motor 8, the lower end of the tube 11 having an inlet 10 from the container 1. Excess agent is returned to the container 1 by overflow from reservoir 12. The transfer roller 14 has projections 17 extending from a recessed peripheral portion 18 (see Fig. 3), these projections penetrate the web so that the web rotates the roller. The periphery of the roller has indentations 20 to apply the stiffener to discrete areas of the web. The web portion 18 of the roller is heated by a stationary annular heater 19. The roller may also be heated by r.f. currents, i.r. radiation or by steam. The roller may be P.T.F.E. coated steel. The web may be pressed onto the transfer roller by a second roller 21. Alternatively the roller 21 may be upstream or downstream of the transfer roller so that the fabric is tensioned against the transfer roller. Web having strips of stiffener may be cut along the strips to form margins. The coated fabric may be cooled by an air stream.
