Abstract

669,424. Trimmings. STEAD & SIMPSON, Ltd., and BEEBY, R. W. July 7, 1950 [July 25, 1949], No. 19496/49. Class 141. A method of making a binding strip, particularly for shoe vamps, includes applying a stiffening medium or adhesive to the central longitudinal portion 2, Fig. 5, of a web 1 preferably woven and having twice the width of the required strip, in which central portion are formed, either previously or subsequently, a series of transverse slots 5, and cutting the web longitudinally along the median line to form the two strips. Each strip has a series of stiffened teeth 22 facilitating its attachment to curved parts. Reinforcing threads 3 may be provided along the edges of the central portion which may comprise cotton warps, there being silk warps on either side and a continuous cotton weft thread. Apparatus for providing the transverse slits may comprise a fluted wheel 6, Fig. 3, having cutting edges 8, and a bed roller 7 which rotate in opposite directions, the web 1 being fed between the two and supported by a slotted plate 9 and tubular guide 10. Adhesive may be applied to the back of the central portion 2 of the web by means of an extrusion nozzle. The web may be divided longitudinally by passing it between a cutting disc and a bed roller in a similar manner to that described for forming the transverse slits. In a modified method, the transverse and longitudinal slits are formed simultaneously by the use of a suitable cutting wheel, the coated web preferably being heated to soften the stiffening agent and cause the teeth to adhere together. In a further modification, the slits may be formed by the omission of certain warps and wefts during weaving of the web, the central portions of spaced groups of weft threads being treated with the stiffening medium. A narrow strip of thin elastic material. may be provided to cover the central portion before it is coated, this providing each binding strip with an elasticated edge. According to the Provisional Specification, the slots may be produced by a reciprocatory wedge-shaped slotter.
