Abstract

1462609 Two stage cracking of hydrocarbons CONTINENTAL OIL CO 11 June 1975 25040/75 Heading C5E A process for producing ethylene comprises (a) hydropyrolysing a hydrocarbon feed in the presence of H 2 , the mole ratio of H 2 : feed being at least 1:1, at 600-900‹ C, a pressure of at least 5 atmos. gauge and a residence time of 0À1-60 seconds, to produce a hydropyrolysis effluent; (b) introducing the hydropyrolysis effluent without prior condensation thereof to a second-stage cracking zone where it is cracked at 750-900‹ C, a pressure not more than 2 atmospheres gauge and a residence time of 0À01-10 seconds, to produce a cracking zone effluent; (c) separating the cracking zone effluent into a H 2 stream, a CH 4 stream, a C 2 H 4 stream, a C 2 H 6 stream and a higher hydrocarbon stream; (d) recycling the H 2 stream to (a) and recycling the ethane steam to (b); and (e) recovering the methane stream and the ethylene stream. Water may also be introduced to the first stage hydropyrolysis. The higher hydrocarbon stream recovered from (c) may be hydrogenated and recycled to the hydropyrolysis, optionally after separation of an aromatics stream.
