Abstract
1461989 Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and hydrocracking CONTINENTAL OIL CO 11 June 1975 25042/75 Heading C5E A process for producing ethane and/or ethylene comprises (a) reacting H 2 and CO in a mole ratio of 1:1 to 5:1 at 150-450‹ C., a pressure of from atmospheric to 75 atmospheres and a space velocity of 500-50,000 V/V/hr S.T.P. in the presence of a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst containing Fe, Co, Ni or Ru to a conversion of at least 50 % of the CO to produce a reaction effluent containing H 2 , CO, CO 2 , H 2 O, hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons; (b) hydrocracking at least part of said effluent at 600-900‹ C., a pressure of at least 5 atmos. gauge and a residence time of 0À1-60 sec., the mole ratio of H 2 to total C 3+ hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons being at least 1:1, and (c) recovering C 2 hydrocarbons for the hydrocracking effluent. H 2 may be separated from the effluent from (b) and recycled to (a) or (b); C 3+ hydrocarbons may be separated from effluent from (b) and recycled to (b). A small concentration of sulphur compounds, e.g. 10 ppm, helps inhibit carbon deposition in the hydrocracking zone. Water or steam in amount up to 3 mol per mole hydrocarbon and oxygenated hydrocarbon may also be introduced into the hydrocracking zone to present carbonization and favour the production of ethylene over ethane.
