Abstract
1453081 Synthetic pipeline gas AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc 26 Sept 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 45129/73 Heading C5E Pipeline gas is produced by partially vaporizing a crude oil feed in the presence of hydrogen at 600-1000‹ F.; reacting the stream of hydrogen and vaporized oil to produce an effluent consisting essentially of methane, ethane, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen and residual aromatic hydrocarbons; removing residual aromatic hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulphide from the effluent; separating hydrogen from the methane and ethane in the purified effluent; reacting steam with ethane contained in the methane and ethane stream to produce a methane/carbon dioxide mixture; and separating carbon dioxide from the methane/carbon dioxide mixture to leave the methane. A crude oil 12 is topped to remove a naphtha of end point 360‹ F. and then partially vaporized by sparging preheated hydrogen from beneath the surface of a pool of the heated oil. The vaporized oil is reacted with hydrogen in a gas recycle hydrogenator (Fig. 2, not shown) at 1000- 1400‹ F. The hydrogen used in the vaporization and gasification of the oil is produced at 20 by partial oxidation of the unevaporated oil 42 from the vaporizer and of a portion of the residual aromatics 36 followed by a water gas shift reaction, removal of H 2 and CO 2 and methanation to remove CO. The gasification effluent 22 is cooled and a stream 44 of hydrogen sulphide and a stream 36 of aromatics are removed. The purified effluent 46 is cooled in the cryogenic separation zone 48 to separate liquefied methane and ethane from the hydrogen 52 which is recycled. The naphtha stream 18 is reacted with steam in a first catalytic rich gas reaction (Fig. 1a, not shown) to produce an effluent which is mixed with the methaneethane stream 50 and the mixture is further reacted with steam in a second catalytic rich gas reactor and then subjected to methanation followed by CO 2 removal.
