Abstract

1462604 Tunnelling machines ROBBINS CO 10 Jan 1975 [8 Feb 1974] 1137/75 Heading E1F A tunnelling machine having a rotary cutterhead 18 pivotally connected by a pin 78 to a support ring 10 is steered by actuating a ram 86 to pivot the cutter head laterally of the tunnel towards the direction of the desired turn so that the cutter head will cut a bore which is offset from a centered position with respect to the support ring towards the inside of the turn. The cutter head 18 is advanced by rams 72 connected between the frame 12 and a gripper assembly 30 having pads 50, 52 and rams 36, 38. Movement of the frame 12 relative to the assembly 30 is accommodated by a pivot pin 56 and torque cylinders 64, 66. The support ring 10 may comprise a plurality of sections which are interconnected by expandable links or two sections pivoted together by the pin 78.
