Abstract

1462468 Brine IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 April 1975 [26 April 1974] 18327/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] The Sr-content of crude brine may be reduced by treatment with Na 2 CO 3 and Ca(OH) 2 using sufficient Na 2 CO 3 to give an excess CO 3 content of 500-800 mg/l., optionally followed by (1) standing of the brine to allow desupersaturation and filtration, (2) addition of CaCl 2 and NaCO 3 solutions, optionally in the presence of seed crystals of CaCO 3 and SrCO 3 , (3) addition of BaCl 2 , (4) treatment with an ion-exchange resin containing imino-di-acetic acid groups, or (5) mixing with waste brine from an electrolysis cell. Alternatively, when the waste cell brine is to be resaturated and recycled, the fresh NaCl may be derived by evaporation of an Sr-purified brine, e.g. prepared by treatment with excess Co 3 as above. The product contains less than 3 mg/l. Sr and is useful for electrolysis.
