Abstract

1462181 Coated fertilizer particles FISONS Ltd 22 March 1974 [28 March 1973] 14822/74 Heading C1B [Also in Division B2] A method of treating particulate fertilizer materials comprises tumbling or agitating fertilizer particles in the presence of a coating agent which comprises a mixture of a surface active agent, e.g. an anionic, cationic or nonionic material, preferably alkylbenzene sulphonates, napthalene sulphonates, olefin sulphonates, alkylene oxide condensates with alcohols, glycols or alkylphenols, long chain amines of formula RNH 2 where R is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group containing 8-25, preferably 18-21 carbon atoms, and fatty acid amide derivatives, and a polyolefin wax, having an average molecular weight of less than 10,000. The tumbling or agitating may be carried out at not more than 70‹ C. Preferably 0À02% to 0À5% by weight of polyolefin wax is applied to the fertilizer. The wax may be a microcrystalline wax and may be sprayed on to the fertilizer particles as an emulsion or dispersion. The wax may have a hardness of 90 or less as determined by the ASTM d-5 test method. The coating agent may comprise 5-40% by weight of the polyolefin wax and 10-30% by weight of the surface active agent.
