Abstract

1462045 Railway systems; propelling vehicles DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd 13 Feb 1974 [28 Feb 1973] 10148/73 Heading B7L A railway wagon speed control means for securement to a railway track rail 1 comprises a wagon speed retarder unit 7, as disclosed in detail in Specification 1,328,086 and also described with reference to Fig. 4, which unit when secured to the track is engageable with wagon wheels on the track; a wagon speed booster 15 engageable when secured to the track with wagon wheels on the track; and a wagon speed responder 34, 35 which initiates retarding operation of the retarder 7 in the case of a wagon moving at or above a predetermined speed and initiates a boosting, i.e. acceleration of the wagon if the wagon is moving below the predetermined speed. The lower end of the rod 9 of the retarder unit operates a control valve unit 11 secured to the bottom of a receptacle 5 guiding the retarder unit and formed in a bracket 2 secured to the said track rail 1. The unit 11 is connected to the booster unit 15 by a compressed air pipe 14. A piston-rod 19 of the unit 15 secured to the rail 1 is raisable to engage and accelerate a wagon wheel when compressed air is supplied to a cylinder 17. A source of compressed air is supplied to an inlet 12 on the unit 11 and supply to the cylinder 17 is controlled by a valve 48 operable by the rod 9. The arrangement is such that when a slow moving wagon wheel approaches the speed control means from the right of Fig. 1 it passes over the rod 19, the head of which is at that time below the level of the head of the rail 1, since the cylinder 17 is vented to atmosphere and engages the retarder 7 so that the rod 9 moving with little resistance as described with reference to Fig. 4 will cause an air venting passage 55 to close and the valve 48 to open sufficiently to allow compressed air to pass to the unit 15 and move the rod 19 upwardly and engage the wheel and accelerate it. If however the wagon approaches the speed control means at a high speed the rod 9 moves against a large resistance and receives a large thrust as described with reference to Fig. 4, and moves the valve 48 further to close-off the air inlet 12 so that the rod 19 is not raised and the wheel will be retarded by the unit 7.
