1461771 Bookbinding REDWOOD BURN GROUP Ltd 15 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 3498/73 Heading B6A In a bookbinding machine, a pile 20 of perforated sheets to be bound by a binding element W consisting of interconnected wire rings, Fig. 2, is conveyed to a binding station B by a chain 24 having projections 26 which engage in the perforations, means being provided at the binding station to lift the pile from the chain and present it to a wire ring closing device 54, 56. The chain is moved intermittently past a first feed station F1 where the pile is placed on the projections, a rest station R, a second feed station F2 where perforated covers are placed on the pile, a sensing station S where the binding operation is stopped when no pile is present, and the binding station B. At this station, a clamping member 32, Fig. 5, is raised by a cam to lift the pile 20 from the projections 26 and press it against an adjustable clamping member 30, the latter consequently being raised until a roller on its pivoted supporting arms 44 abuts a member 46. The clamped pile is then moved, transversely of the chain, to the closing device 54, 56 and, after binding, back past the projections on the chain, the clamping members then being opened and the bound pile ejected from a sloping portion of a feed table 22 by ejector bars 62 carried on chains 63. The projections, which may be spikes, are set at a slight angle to the normal to the sloping portion of the feed table.
