Abstract
1425974 Feeding sheets; gumming and pasting apparatus SMYTH EUROPEA SpA 17 July 1973 [18 July 1972] 34092/73 Heading B8R [Also in Division D1] Signatures separated from a pile 15 are forwarded on endless conveyer 23 to opening devices which place the opened signatures astride a saddle 57 oscillatable in a direction transverse its ridge between a position adjacent the opening devices and a position adjacent the sewing devices G3 of a sewing machine 1. Sheet separators.-Signatures are simultaneously separated from the bottoms of a pair of side-by-side piles 15 by oscillatable suction cups 17. Sheet carriers.-The separated signatures are transferred to oscillatable grippers 19 which move the signatures into clips 29 mounted on oscillatable arms 30. The arms 30 lower the signatures into a position where their rear edges are engaged by pusher devices 24a on endless chain conveyer 23. Opening devices for folded signatures.-Oscillatable suction cups 39 lift the upper leaf of each signature and an oscillatable rod 41 maintains the signature in this condition until the grippers 37 of a transfer cylinder 35 engage the leading edge of the lower leaf S2. Grippers 36 on the cylinder 35 grasp the back of each signature which is then carried downwards and placed astride the saddle 57. Movable saddles: registering sheets. - The saddle 57 is oscillatable about pivot 59 under the control of cam 61 During movement of the saddle towards sewing devices 63 a pair of signatures S carried thereby, Fig. 6, is laterally registered by pushers 65 movable by a lever 66 under the control of a face cam 70. Also during the saddle movement a smoothing device 85, Fig. 10, carrying a spring 86 is moved down the face 73 of the saddle to smooth the leaf S2. Gumming and pasting apparatus.-Spatulas 103, Fig. 12, carried on endless chains 99 may be arranged to supply pads to the external faces of the upper halves S3 of the signatures adjacent the backs thereof. The paste is supplied to the spatulas by a roller dipping in a trough 91 of paste.
