Abstract

1461107 Stacking sheets INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 20 Nov 1974 50346/74 Heading B8R In an apparatus wherein items of mail are stacked against a receding back stop 40, the stop is arranged on a carriage 46 to permit its withdrawal from a stack supporting position, its movement towards the front of the stack and its insertion into the stack at a position adjacent the front end of the stack. When the stop 40 is removed (by upward pivotting about pin 47, Fig. 5, not shown) the stack is supported by a finger 44 which is normally accommodated within a recess 42 of the stop. The portion of the stack located behind the re-inserted stop 40 may be manually moved towards lip 20d at the end of the receiver whereupon the supporting finger 44, which is carried on an endless belt (58, Fig. 4, not shown) is pivotted downwardly around the belt roller 60 to permit the discharge of the stack into an underlying tray 18 which may be slid relative to base 22, 23 as the stack is discharged thereinto. A pin 70 is engaged by finger 44 as this progresses along the receiver and the pin is connected to a stop 76 which prevents the stop 40 being moved more than a predetermined distance upstream of the finger, thus ensuring a predetermined size of discharged stack. The stop 40, the finger 44 and the pin 70 are all biased towards the upper end of the receiver by weights 50, 80 and 64 respectively.
