Abstract

1460355 Hydroxy-indane derivatives AGFAGEVAERT 8 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 15469/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] 1,1,3,3 - Tetramethyl - 5 - hydroxyindane is prepared by pumping gaseous isobutylene for 1 hour at 150‹ C. into an autoclave containing 4-isopropylphenol in toluene and acid activated fuller's earth and stirring for 6 hours at 150‹ C. 1,1,3,3 - Tetramethyl - 5 - hydroxy - 6 - chloroindane is prepared similarly in a glass flask. 1,1 - Bis - (1,1,3,3 - tetramethyl - 5 - hydroxyindan - 6 - yl) isobutylidene is prepared by adding isobutyraldehyde at 120‹ C. to 1,1,3,3- tetramethyl - 5 - hydroxyindane and concentrated H 2 SO 4 , lowering the temperature to 80‹ C. during the addition, heating to 90‹ C. for 2 hours, boiling with benzene, water and sodium acetate and cooling. Bis-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-5- hydroxyindan - 6 - yl) thioether is prepared by stirring 1,1,3,3 - tetramethyl - 5 - hydroxyindane and sulphur dichloride in benzene at 50‹ C. for 3 hours and cooling. 1,1-Dimethyl-5- cyclopentyl - 6 - hydroxyindane is prepared by stirring 1,1 - dimethyl - 6 - hydroxyindane, ptoluenesulphonic acid and cyclopentene at 125‹ C. in an autoclave for 5 hours. 1,1-Dimethyl - 5,7 - dicyclopentyl - 6 - hydroxyindane is prepared by heating at 220‹ C. 1,1-dimethyl - 6- hydroxyindane, aluminium grit and mercury (II) chloride in an autoclave for 1 hour with stirring, cooling, releasing pressure, adding cyclopentane and stirring at 200‹ C. for 10 hours.
