Abstract

1460087 Display devices CITIZEN WATCH CO Ltd 11 Oct 1974 [13 Oct 1973] 44157/74 Heading G5C A liquid crystal display device providing a digital display or the like includes a transparent conductive electrode 24, 26, &c. representing each complete digit or symbol to be displayed, the electrodes being arranged in a stack separated from each other by insulating transparent films 12, 14 &c. of silicon monoxide, the stack being carried on a glass plate 10 placed over a nematic liquid crystal 56 of positive dielectric anisotropy. A polarizer 54 and mirror 52 are placed beneath the liquid crystal. Driving voltages are applied between the electrodes 24, 26 &c. in magnitudes increasing as their distances from a conductive layer 20. The film 14 is "rubbed" in order to twist the liquid crystal. In another form, two liquid crystal cells are arranged back to back on a central glass plate between a reflector and a polarizer.
