Abstract

1458897 Connecting light guides CANNON ELECTRIC (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd 9 July 1974 30354/74 Heading G2J An optical contact element which may form part of a connector 1, 2 comprises a metal ferrule 8 Fig. 2 having a cylindrical tunnel throughout the major portion of its length and a perpendicular endface which has a central aperture of less diameter than the tunnel. The optical fibre 5 has tail portion of reduced diameter the end of which is located centrally of the aperture by an optically transparent potting compound, after which the endfaces of the ferrule and the fibre are ground flat. The ferrule 8 of one part 2 of the connector may be slidable within a contact housing 9 against a spring 6 Fig. 2 to ensure good contact with the fixed fibre 4 of the other part 1 of the connector Fig. 1. Parts 1, 2 may be held together by a bayonet or screw-coupling nut 3.
