Abstract
1458490 Gauging coated pipes KABELUND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE AG 10 March 1975 [13 March 1974] 9856/75 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B2 and F2] A thermally insulated pipe is produced continuously by applying on to a pre-heated pipe a composition of a synthetic resin, which is expandable and crosslinkable, and initiating cross-linking before expanding the composition. The pipe is preferably made from copper or copper alloy and in a preferred method of making the insulated pipe particles of a composition containing polyethylene are sprinkled on to a heated pipe (optionally electrostatically), the coated pipe being forced through a heated gauging aperture, then heated to initiate crosslinking and expansion. Suitable coatings contain cross-linked expanded polymers or copolymers of ethylene, butylene, propylene and vinyl chloride, and the coated pipe may be top-coated with p.v.c. The coating may be alternatively cross-linked and expanded using high energy radiation and there may be present a longitudinally overlapping strip of paper or synthetic resin film between the tube and the foam coating to facilitate removal of the coating.
