Abstract

1457850 Rolling mills INST CHERNOI METALLURGII 4 Oct 1974 43199/74 Heading B3M A roll stand 8 forming part of a continuous mill for rolling bar or tube includes a drive roll 12 rotated by a shaft 13 and one or more idle rolls 14 and 15 each of which has a commutatorless electric motor associated with it for rotating the roll at a speed equal to that of the driven roll before rolling commences. The motor includes a rotor 24 connected to the roll and a stator 17 fixed to a stationary housing 10, the stator having printed windings. The speed of the rotor is measured by a sensor 30, compared with the sensed speed of the shaft 13, and any error signal is fed to a variable frequency A.C. supply for the stator in order to equalize the speeds of the driven roll and the or each idle roll. The stator is liquid cooled, and compressed cooling air is fed to the space between the rotor and stator. The arrangement of the bearings for each idle roll and of the rotor may be changed (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
