Abstract

1,218,056. Alternators. E. S. BEYERS. 9 Oct., 1968, No. 47747/68. Heading H2A. In an alternator comprising a planar air gap 32 separating from a stator 11 having coils 30 a shaft-mounted rotor 10 having magnets 20, the shaft 16 is floatably mounted in bearings 12, 13 and the rotor has vanes 38 which when rotating create a thrust which can move the rotor axially away from the stator. Applicable to widely variable frequency alternators such as are used in motor cars, the movement is opposed by a spring 24 whose compression is adjustable by threads 27 of a bearing housing in order to maintain a substantially constant voltage throughout the alternator speed range, and is influenced by the pressure differential in chambers 44, 46 having relatively small and large ports 40, 42 through which passes a cooling air flow. The magnets are permanent magnets and in a modification the vanes are on the opposite side of the rotor the yoke 18 of which is channelled.
