Abstract

1457329 Power assisted steering systems ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 10 May 1974 [10 May 1973] 20753/74 Heading B7H A power steering system includes a valve arrangement for cutting off the power assistance as the steering motor approaches the end of its stroke. The steering motor chambers 9, 10 are supplied from a pump 2 via a control valve 4 and the motor piston 12 is connected by an arm 13 to the steering shaft 14. The pump supply line 3 is connected to a valve 27, having chambers 28, 30 separated by a spring loaded piston 29, and the working lines 7, 8 are connected to chambers 19, 20 of limiting valves 17, 18 which include spring bonded pistons 25, 26, actuated by cams 15, 16 in the steering shaft, in chambers 23, 24 connected by line 31 to chamber 30 of valve 27. The chambers 28, 30 of the valve 27 are inter-connected by a throttle line 34 and piston 29 normally closes an exhaust groove 36. Clockwise rotation of shaft 14 moves the spool 40 of valve 4 to the left and pressure fluid enters chambers 10 and 20 whilst chambers 9 and 19 are exhausted. When cam 15 lifts piston 25 fluid in chamber 30 of valve 27 is exhausted via the limiting valve 17 and piston 29 is moved by the pressure differential thereacross to open groove 36 and thus spill the supply from the pump to exhaust.
