Abstract

1535722 Power steering systems ADWEST ENG Ltd 3 Nov 1975 [6 Aug 1974] 34640/74 Heading B7H A rotary valve, particularly for use in a rack- and-pinion power-assisted steering system, comprises a valve sleeve 5 and a relatively rotatable hollow valve rotor 6 each having axial grooves 5b, 5d and 17, 20 for controlling fluid flow, the rotor having a radial passage 19 connecting its interior 18 to an outlet port 3, and at least one of the rotor grooves 20 being connected to its interior 18 by a restricting passage 21, which passage acts to create a back pressure and reduce valve noise. The sleeve 5 has annular grooves 12, 13, 14 separated by seals 22-25 grooves 12 and 14 being connected to opposite sides of a working cylinder and groove 13 communicating with an inlet 2. Groove 12 is connected to axial grooves 5b by passages 5a and groove 14 to grooves 5d by passages 5c whilst groove 13 is connected to grooves 17 of the rotor by passages 16. With the rotor biased to the null state by torsion rod 8 fluid from inlet 2 passes to groove 13 and then via passages 16, grooves 17, grooves 5b, 5d, grooves 20, and passages 21 to the rotor interior and finally via passage 19 to outlet 3. As the rotor is rotated, say clockwise (Fig. 3, not shown), communication between grooves 17 and 5d and between grooves 20 and 5b is cut off so fluid flows from inlet 2 to one side of the working cylinder via groove 13, passages 16, grooves 17 and 5b and passages 5a and fluid is exhausted from the other side via passages 5c, grooves 5d and 20, passages 21, the rotor interior 18 and passage 19.
