Abstract

1457216 Artificial resin binder compositions OWENS - CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 7 March 1975 [18 March 1974 (3)] 9657/75 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A binder composition comprises an aq. dispersion of (A) a polycondensate, (B) a hydrolysable silane coupling agent or the hydrolysis products thereof, and (C) starch, a starch ether of benzyl alcohol or a C 1-4 alkanol, or starch degradation product. (A) is a phenolformaldehyde, resorcinol - formaldehyde, amineformaldehyde, phenolamine-formaldehyde, furfural, or furfuryl alcohol condensate. In (B) the hydrolysable group is COOH, halogen, NH 2 , of C 1-4 alkoxy, and the silane also has a substituent containing an epoxy or amine group, or a halogen atom. In (A), the amine may be urea and/or melamine. Ca(OH) 2 , cement, triethanolamine, and phthalic anhydride may be present in the reaction mixture for making (A). (B) may be H 2 NC 2 H 4 NHC 3 H 6 SiOCH 2 CH 3 ) 3 or (C) may be pretreated with aq. phosphoric or sulphuric acid. Also present may be a free-radical inhibitor, a tetraalkoxysilane, boric acid, ammonium borate or pentaborate, R 3 BO 3 where R is C# 12 alkyl or aryl, (RO) 3 P=O, lignin sulphonate, or polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl alcohol, Portland cement, diethylene glycol, Ca(OH) 2 , or methanol. (C) may be a dextrin, or a starch degradation-product containing dextrose. The composition may be used to bond glass fibres or spheres.
