Abstract

1344665 Water glass/thermosetting resin moulded products A GREGOR 10 Nov 1971 52302/71 Heading C3N A mixture for the production of moulded products comprises a mineral filler and a binder, which is a combination of an inorganic binder and an organic binder, the inorganic binder being potassium and/or sodium water glass and the organic binder being a thermosetting resin the pH value of which, before being mixed with the water glass, is higher than 8, e.g. 11-12. The thermosetting resin may be produced by the condensation of an aldehyde or ketone with a phenol, urea, melamine or furfuryl alcohol. The mixture may contain 1-6% by weight of the thermosetting resin and 3-30% by weight of potassium or sodium water glass. The diameter of the fine grains of the filler may amount to 1/12-1/3 of the diameter of the coarse grains. Dicalcium silicate or an alkali metal sulphonate may also be added as a hardener for the water glass. In addition 3-50% by weight of mineral polymer or natural fibres may be mixed with the mineral and binder components. Steel rods, mats or fabrics may be added as additional reinforcing means. The mixture may be moulded into the form of bricks, hollow blocks, and slabs. The example refers to the production of a moulded article from quartz sand (55% vol. 0À8-1 mm. diameter; 45% vol. 0À1-0À8 mm.), a phenol resol and potassium water glass.
