Abstract

1457046 Foundry moulding; moulds TRW Inc 23 July 1974 32545/74 Headings B3G and B3F [Also in Division H5] A wax-type pattern within a shell mould is removed therefrom by incorporating in the mould a material having a high loss factor of at least 1À0 in the frequency range of 300 to 30,000 megahertz and subjecting the mould to microwave energy in that frequency range to liquefy the pattern. The material may be graphite or carbon and applied as one or more dip coats to the pattern or to the mould outer surface. The microwave treatment may be followed by hot air drying. Mould clusters on pallets, not shown, are received by drive rollers 12 in a compartment 11 of a furnace and, after passing automatically raised and lowered shielding baffles 15, 17 are conveyed to a microwave treating section energized by generators 18, 19 and waveguies 20, 21. The moulds are then subjected to hot air from a blower 31 before leaving the furnace via automatically raised and lowered shielding baffles 25, 26. Molten wax is received by a trough 29.
