Abstract

1456581 Filtering emulsions containing microorganisms IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 8151/74 Heading BID [Also in Division C5] Microorganisms are filtered from an emulsion capable of acting as a coolant or lubricant in a metal working process, by passing the emulsion through a filter element comprising a mass of inorganic fibres. The emulsion may be an oil-in-water or waterin-oil emulsion. The fibres which may have a mean diameter of 0.1-10 microns, may be asbestos, glass, aluminosilicate, alumina, zirconia and/or alumina/sillica fibres. The fibrous mass may be loose or bonded together, e.g. in the form of paper, cloth, sheet, board or felt. Many bonding agents are specified. The filter element may comprise a spiral roll of fibrous sheet, or an inner permeable cylinder on which the fibrous material is helically wound and an outer permeable cylinder, the cylinders being made of perforated metal or plastics or wire mesh. The filter element may also comprise cellulose, nylon or polyethylene fibres, kieselguhr, active carbon. Fullers earth and polyvinyl pvrrolidone. The filter element may be cleaned by heating. A wire mesh filter may be used in series with the filter element.
