Abstract

Ink-ribbon mechanism; letter-spacing mechanism.-In typewriters in which the spring-drum shaft is geared to a transverse ribbon-feeding shaft which is movable axially to reverse the feed, the spring-drum shaft 4 is provided with a crownwheel 18 which gears with a broad-pinion 31 on the ribbon-feeding shaft 30, the breadth of the pinion being such that the pinion always remains in gear. The crown-wheel is provided with ratchet-teeth 19 engaging a detent 26 formed with a finger 29 which co-operates with the flange of the crown-wheel to limit the movement of the detent. The driving-spring 10 is housed in a casing 9 coupled to the crown-wheel by means of a dog 20 which engages the ratchet-teeth 19. The dog is pivoted to a lug 22 on the drum and is held in engagement by a spring 24 arranged between ears 23, 25 on the dog and the casing. For attaching the casing to the drum 5 that carries the carriage-propelling band 8, the casing may be formed with ears 12 having notches 14, Fig. 3, for engaging slots 13 in the drum, relative angular movement being prevented by the engagement of an ear 15 with a recess 17 in the drum. The driving-spring is secured at one end to the shaft 4 and is formed at the other end with a loop 11 which is passed over one of the ears 12.
