Abstract

1455705 Continuous casting BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 11 Dec 1973 [6 April 1973] 57295/73 Addition to 1396788 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] Fibre or continuous filament is made from a pool 10 of molten material by projection from an edge 32 of a rotating heat-extracting body 30 breaking the pool surface as in the parent Specification 1,396,788 and, in addition, a non-oxidizing atmosphere is provided at the point 51 where the edge 32 penetrates the surface. Specific molten materials are carbon steels but any material having the properties given in the parent specification may be used. The gas 41, Fig. 4, may be nitrogen, argon, helium, krypton, acetylene, natural gas, methane, cracked ammonia or forming gas. A reducing gas supplied may yield, in the region 12, Fig. 5, reducing or inert combustion products and carbon particles. It may be supplied by a nozzle and clear the melt surface, at the region 12, of particulate flux or oxide floating as a layer on the surface. In Fig. 4, it is supplied at 40 to a shroud 45, which may also be used with the arrangement of Fig. 5 in which a cover 22 restricts access of the atmosphere to the melt 10. Alternatively, a nozzle may introduce gas above or below the cover 22. The cover 22, e.g. of carbon or graphite, absorbs or reacts with atmospheric oxygen (when heated by radiation from the melt or by an induction heating system 25 for heating the melt) to provide a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The rotating disc, e.g. water-cooled and of copper, has at least one tapering portion 31 terminating in the edge 32 and the edge may be notched at intervals so that fibre lengths of material are produced. Three abutting discs of copper, aluminium and brass respectively are used in one example. The products may not be of circular cross-section but the section is of such area that a filament of circular section and of the same area would have a diameter less than 0À060 inch. To improve the release of the filament 20 from the rotating disc 30, the edge is buffed by a wheel (60), bearing heat-resistant fabric, beyond the point of release.
