Abstract

1455424 Heat exchangers; heating and cooling liquids by contact with solids TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK and TOYODAKOKI KK 12 Nov 1973 [22 Nov 1972] 52466/73 Headings F4S, F4K and F4U [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] Oil supplied to a hydraulic actuator 81 of a machine tool is maintained at a constant temperature by circulating it through a plurality of longitudinally extending passageways 17 in a flow and temperature control device comprising a housing 1 which is kept at a constant predetermined temperature by a helically wound heat exchange element 16 embedded therein. The temperature of the housing is sensed by a detector 101 connected to a control unit 102. The heat exchange element 16 may comprise heating and/or cooling means. As shown the element 16 comprises an electric heater but alternatively (see Fig. 5), or additionally a hollow coil through which heating and/or cooling fluid can flow may be employed. The oil either takes up heat from or gives heat to the housing as it passes through the passages 17. In use oil from a storage tank 80 enters the housing through an inlet 71 and, after passing through the passages 17 and a flow rate adjusting device, leaves through an outlet 12 and is supplied to the hydraulic actuator 81; oil leaving the actuator passes back to the storage tank and then to the housing. The flow rate adjusting device includes a needle valve 2 axially movable towards or away from a tapering surface E in a valve seat member 5. Each passage 17 includes an insert member in the form of a rod 6 which is either provided with a peripheral helical groove, as shown, or with a plurality of axially extending passages (61, Fig. 4, not shown).
